There are four major events in cycling: Le Tour de France, Il Giro di Italia, The World Championships, and La Vuelta a España.

La Vuelta is quite an event in Spain. People follow the race through the television, and hundreds-in some of the stages thousands-travel to see their heroes in the flesh.

Cycling is a very popular sport in Spain. There are cycling clubs in almost every Spanish city, pro runners are considered as super-sportsmen, and kids dream of becoming Miguel Indurain or Abraham Olano. It is not strange, then, that La Vuelta, an event that brings together the best professional riders in the world, can stir up such passions among Spaniards.

There’s a fresh breed with new triumphs joining today’s world of professional sport cycling: Alberto Contador, winner of the 2007 Tour de France and the 2008 Giro d’Italia; Carlos Sastre, winner of the 2008 Tour de France; and Samuel Sánchez, Gold Medalist in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing in the Road Racing category.

The sacrifice of the cyclists, their incredible strength, and the absence of dirty tricks are among the characteristics most loved by the fans of this sport. The many spectacular moments during the races also go a long way towards explaining its success. On hot afternoons, Spaniards gather in front of the TV to watch the end of each day's stage. It's La Vuelta.
