An innovative way for you to introduce yourself to the cultures of Spain and Latin America is by watching films in Spanish. The exposure to the language through film is an excellent form of training your ear to the rhythm and cadence of spoken Spanish as well as learning colloquial expressions.
Some Latin American countries are breaking ground within the filmmaking world with vividly rich cinematography. Also, the increase of Spanish-speaking actors in English-language films (such as Paz Vega in Spanglish, for example) and of films made or set in Spain and some parts of Latin America have strongly influenced the Spanish market today, propelling the Spanish language into wider international focus.
This brings legendary Cuban cinematographer, Julio García Espinosa’s words to light:
“A country without an image is a country which does not exist. Our first duty remains of making Latin America (and Spain) visible.”
Cinema in Spanish is a prosperous industry whose booming phenomenon can be observed each year as more films are presented in various movie festivals or are nominated/awarded Hollywood’s infamous gilded globe of the Golden Globes ceremony & the golden statues of the Academy Awards (Oscars) or the small bronze trophy bust of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya in Spain’s much anticipated annual national awards – Los Premios Goya.
